BAM
Brass, copper, powdercoating.
I was inspired by knuckle tattoos, graffiti, and comic books when designing this double knuckle ring. While creating a mood board I discovered MLK Bijoux on Instagram, an artist that creates custom silver rings of graffiti artists’ tags. Their work reminded me of knuckle tattoos and brass knuckles, informing my decision to create a double ring. Wanting the spirit of brass knuckles without the violent appearance, I was drawn to the onomatopoeia in comic books that ensured a playful and figurative take on the artifact.

My final sketches were done on paper and cut out to determine scale and placement on my hand. I taped the cutouts onto my metal and scored an outline to ensure an accurate scale.
After cutting out my pieces, I first shaped and soldered together the ring bands. Then I drilled holes in the top pieces of the rings and soldered the rivet posts to the base piece. I then made color samples with the powder coating gun and sifter and tested out my lettering cutouts. Once the ring bands and base piece were soldered together and my powder coating was complete, I riveted the pieces together.
